Henry (Harry) Gough Sharkey Northern Ireland Branch, National Malaya & Borneo Veterans’ Association.
20th March 1936 – 11th November 2014
Andai nya kita terlupa. Harry’s life was lived to the full; his influence was palpable in any social gathering, always for the improvement of society.
It is with great sadness the Northern Ireland Branch must announce the passing of Mr Henry (Harry) Gough Sharkey. Harry was a stalwart and major influence and regular of the Northern Ireland Branch. At 77, Harry lived life to the full and was always “game” to have a go at most things, last year he abseiled down the Europa hotel in Belfast as well as trying to persuade the chief of defence staff of Malaysia to allow him to make a parachute jump with their army.
Harry had a long and happy service career in both RAF and Army spanning over 30 years. He started life as an apprentice at the RAF Maintenance Unit at Aldergrove. Whilst there he joined the 502 Squadron auxiliary air force, with many tales of his life in the air force and his squadron pals. Harry decided that the air force was for him. He served in Malaysia during the first emergency as well as the middle-east where he was caught in an explosion and transported as a casualty back to UK.
On leaving the Air force and with the “Troubles” starting in Northern Ireland, Harry joined the newly formed U.D.R. on a part time basis to start. His talent and past experience together with local knowledge, he was persuaded to go “full time”.
Harry went from strength and rose to the rank of W.O.2 and saw much action and was mentioned in Dispatches for one of his many exploits. After his retirement, he took on the role of Range Warden to the Royal Irish Regiment until his full retirement last year.
Harry was one of the famous 4 who was hosted by the Malaysian armed forces and proved to be a very popular veteran with the senior army and air force officers as well as the senior police officers of the State. Many words of condolences have been sent by all of the Malaysian Officers.
Harry, we will miss you, Rest in Peace Dear Friend
