On Sunday 15th September 2013 a memorial in the courtyard of Maidstone Museum, Kent, was unveiled by the Mayor of Maidstone and General Sir Geoffrey Howlett KBE MC.
The statue commemorated those members of the regiment who had made the ultimate sacrifice between 1946 and 1966.
The statue of a Royal West Kent soldier patrolling during the Malaya Emergency, was crafted by Peter Birkett with great care and accuracy, to the OG uniform, 44 Pattern webbing, Lee Enfield No. 5 Jungle Carbine and even a native parang on the soldier’s belt.
The Royal West Kent Regiment served in Malaya from March 1951 to March 1954 and the Queen’s Own Buffs, Royal Kent Regiment served in Borneo during 1966.
