William (Bill) Joseph Docherty
14th May 1950 – 4th March 2019
Bill, an Associate Member, had spent a portion of his youth living in Ipoh, Malaya, where his father was serving with the Army and remembered those early years with great fondness, especially the abundance of wildlife and monkeys he came across in his childhood spare time rambles.
In later life back in Northern Ireland, Bill served with 152(Ulster) Transport Regiment, Royal Corps of Transport, the 2nd and 8th Battalions of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC and was also a volunteer instructor with 817 Squadron Air Training Corps, Lisburn preparing cadets for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. He worked for the Northern Ireland Fire Service in their Control Room prior to retirement.
He had a lifelong interest in countryside activities, a great knowledge of life in general with the ability to tell a multitude of interesting yarns of amusing incidents. In his youth he had been three times in the Northern Ireland finals for MENSA.
Bill was laid to rest dressed in his NMBVA blazer and UDR CGC tie, beside him, his medals and the Malaysian National Flower bunga Raya (hibiscus rosa).
He will be very much missed by his dear Wife Maureen, Son David and Michael, Sister Betty, extended family and wide circle of friends.
